In this work, we present a study, design and executing of a restaurant and café in Damascus. The project consists of the main restaurant block which consisting of two floors with an area of (100) square meters each, a kiosk for preparing hot and cold drinks and chocolate with an area of (25) square meters, a back terrace with an area of (35) square meters, and a front landscape with an area of 100 square meters.
The approved design was based on the principles of parametric design within a deconstructive framework that adopts lines, blocks, forms, and geometric relations that are extended and refracted from the entrance to the interior space and continuous to form the rest activities of the place and branch out on the walls and ceiling within balanced and tight kinetic angles and forms.
The spaces, architectural blocks, sizes and shapes employed in the design were studied to enable the optimal use of the available space that serves the required function and the desired needs.
The presence of the triangular shape and pyramidical oriented structure is one of the basics of the approach that we follow in most of our work, because of its visual impact and a striking presence that expressing movement, permanent progress and forward orientation, and strongly embodies our concept of out of the ordinary, breaking the structure of the regular shape and employing the acute angle despite the difficulty of dealing with the resulting solutions.
In order to connect with nature and generate a sense of enthusiasm and suspense, we adopted the principle of growth, flexibility, and kinetic continuity for space elements, which serve also the aim of achieving agility and lightness, making use of the available space at the highest level, liberating the architectural space, and suggesting spaciousness, despite the narrowness of the space. That’s clearly appeared in the formation of the spiral stair, which formed of a single line that extends from the wall behind the reception table and continues to the ceiling and breaks downwards, then extends in a spiral manner to form the stair of ascension and linked with the elements constituting the formations of the first floor, all that gives the visitor a sense of confidence and solidity and motivates him to ascend and explore the first floor and the rest of the activities of the place.
The principle of growth was clearly enshrined in the triangular wooden formations of the decorative partition next to the stairs, which present a dynamic movement from the ground towards the ceiling, and continue with parametric formations to turn into pyramids of light, and then meet with the formation of the center column, which is designed in the form of a tree stump, which morphed and abstract in a remarkable geometric shape, adding a sense of balance and safety and ensuring The stability of the studied space..
Moving upwards, and after completing the spiral formation of the staircase, we tended to employ the pyramidical shape in processing the sides of the staircase and with a continuous parametric formation that extended upwards to connect with the ceiling and form the spiral lighting block hanging from the ceiling, in order to extinguish a feeling similar to climbing mountains and navigating through rugged rocks, and to enrich this Feeling a lot of plants has been added and profusely in this area.
We deliberately employed transparent materials in the treatment the ceiling of the first floor, in order to connect with nature and give a sense of spaciousness and visual comfort, knowing that the ceiling of the main hall in up stare is fully sliding and concealable.
Also, a metal formation simulating tree branches was employed and extends from the entrance to the hall at the end of the staircase and branches in the ceiling in different directions and overlaps with a number of wooden lighting pyramids.
The slope behind the restaurant was studied and designed in a way that suits the special personality of the restaurant and emphasizes the importance of the natural green elements in the general landscape of the studied project, where special types of plants and flowers were employed with extended and broken lines and triangular areas of red roses, emphasizing them with strip lighting and the extended areas of the green meadow in a framework Color integration with the color of the red flowers..
In the back terrace, natural basalt stone was employed with various formations and somewhat rational design lines, in order to make the most of the available space, and in order to add a kind of intimacy, psychological comfort, and visual and auditory pleasure, a softly flowing mural waterfall element has been added to the restaurant's back walls and A number of plant basins has been added within the waterfall, with an emphasis on hidden lighting.
The back staircase was dealt with as an essential first element in receiving the visitors coming from the back way of the restaurant, where metal construction were employed irregularly coiled in different directions and in a red color that draws the visitor and hanging up the mass of zigzag lighting element in form look like Lightning and motivating to move forward and explore the place.
On the front landscape, a huge screen (3 * 6 m) was added as an element of attraction and motivation for people to visit the place, siting for a long time, and enjoy their favorite programs while eating. Also, the formations of the plant ponds in the terrace were used as public sittings, which were treated with extended and continuous broken lines of natural wood material. The triangular forms was also employed in the treatment of tree ponds in the middle, and employed them as public fixed sittings that accommodate a large number of visitors.
In order to secure large orders and to relieve pressure on the internal restaurant services kitchen, we resorted to adding an external preparation and serving kiosk specialized in securing all kinds of hot and cold drinks and chocolate. in this part also, We have adopted the same method that we used in treating most parts of the restaurant, including broken lines, sharp angles, and pyramid forms and in focusing on the importance of employing the logos as an important and remarkable visual design element. A metal formation was added with a parametric formation that connects the main restaurant block and the kiosk block in order to emphasize the organic relationship between themes.
The dazzling method of size and geometric formation was followed in the treatment of the external elevations, relying mainly on pyramid forms refracted with sharp angles and with a longitudinal and vertical extension that is graceful and continuous and extends from the front facade of the restaurant towards the side and back facades, also, and to secure the required transparency for the glass facades surrounding the restaurant halls on the two floors, we resorted to adding A hollow parametric metal formation in a pure red color to emphasize the importance of the place and secure the function of breaking the sun's rays at peak times without affecting the external view of the restaurant halls. We also intended to highlight the logos as an important element in the process of visual reading of the function without the need to resort to writing.
Inside the restaurant and within the services space, the buffet, and the kitchen, we resorted to employing the pyramidical shape also in designing the doors, storage, and most of the service activities in these sections, with the addition of an important element in our design approach, which is the recessed fretwork, with a geometric formation closer to a spider’s web, and in a pure red color to frame the pyramid formations and emphasize their importance.
Also, the decorative partitions, windows, glass facades, and the facades of some furniture elements also not devoid of the design elements and formations used in the rest of the project sections, as they were enriched with dynamic broken lines and parametric formations, in which the triangle had the most prominent role.
